How to Buy New Carpet Without Getting Scammed!

By Alan Fletcher - Carpet Expert and Consumer Advocate

Welcome! I'm Alan Fletcher, a third generation Carpet expert and nationally recognized consumer advocate since 1998. I have retired after 30-years in the Carpet business and I no longer sell or install Carpet.

I now enjoy helping homeowners by providing FREE Carpet buying information and honest advice. My flooring advice has been featured often on HGTV, AARP Magazine and RedPlum to name a few.

I've already helped over a million homeowners like you to choose new Carpet wisely, save hundreds & avoid common Scams! I can help you too... It's a free service that I provide to all homeowners!

1. New flooring is going to cost more than you expect!

Most homeowners experience sticker shock when they discover the true final cost of buying new floor covering. Choosing the right materials and getting qualified installation is just part of the overall costs involved. There are dozens of unforeseen and unexpected  installation costs you may encounter including: Removal of the old carpet & padding; Dump fees: Floor repair or preparation costs: Transition metals or custom thresholds: Door trimming: Tack-less removal and replacement: Custom stair work and upholstery. These are just a few of the more common extra fees and charges you might encounter and can easily add up to hundreds or more when buying new flooring of any type. If you plan on replacing your carpet or flooring in a mobile home, you can expect to pay a bit more for installation costs and floor preparation fees.

2. Many flooring retailers will try to over-charge you...

There are dozens of retail scams to watch out for. One of the more common scams is to over-measure your material needs. Most homeowners have no idea how much material they really need for their flooring project. For example: If you actually need 100 yards of Carpet for your home... the salesperson may say you need 110 yards of carpet. If you are over-measured by just 10 yards, you stand to over-pay by $500 or more depending on the cost of the materials and labor. How would you know if you have been over-measured? One way to avoid this scam is to buy from an honest and reputable dealer. See who I recommend near you.

3. Protect yourself from lawsuits. Verify everyone you hire to do work on your property.

This is mainly for homeowners who plan to hire an independent flooring installer or contractor and pay him directly for his services. Make sure the contractor you hire is state licensed if required, and has a valid and up-to-date Worker's Compensation Policy that covers himself and each and every one of his employees. If you hire a contractor to do work on your home and a worker becomes injured, you may be held liable to pay for all the medical bills and perhaps much more. I have posted a partial List of State Contractor Requirements and who you need to contact to verify if a contractor before you hire them to work on your property. Learn more

Learn the Truth about Buying New Carpet!

The retail Carpet marketplace has changed so dramatically over the past 35 years that few homeowners today have a clue about how to select the proper grade of carpet for their home. Get it wrong and you stand to lose thousands. When shopping for carpet, you have three main issues to understand...

So what does all this mean to you?

You Need To Learn How to Protect Yourself! It's very easy for unsuspecting homeowners to become a victim of a Carpet Scam. To avoid this, you need to be aware of the sneaky tricks carpet sellers use to trick you.

#1 The Carpet Fiber Scam

#2 The Measuring Scam

#3 The Installation Scam

Take your time, read thru all my free articles and do some comparison shopping by visiting a few locally owned carpet retailers. Take carpet samples with you from store to store to compare. Take notes, ask lots of questions and email me any difficult carpet or padding questions you may have. Check out my free common carpet questions and answers pages here.

Choosing the right carpet for your home will be time consuming, often complicated and very frustrating. Getting a fair & square price for your entire carpet job will require some serious reading about carpet specifications and about the fibers they use to make carpets.

Carpet installed improperly can easily lose HALF of it's intended lifespan. You need to make sure your carpet is installed correctly. You will need to check your carpet installer's references, make a few phone calls, verify your state contractor requirements,  Verify the surety bond, state license, liability insurance and even verify the Workers' Compensation Insurance policy. These are just a few reasons why you need my help and advice!

My research reveals that about 74% of all homeowners end up choosing the wrong grade of carpet or padding to meet their needs and goals. I also find that about 84% of homeowners end up with a poor quality installation job. Most homeowners don't spend enough money to buy the right grade of carpet and soon become unhappy with their Carpet Durability and Performance

Choosing new Carpet requires you becoming knowledgeable about carpet construction. Here are a few critical areas that you need to learn about in order to make an informed choice.

Carpet Longevity vs. Carpet Cost

How long do you want your new carpet to last? 5 years, 10 years, 20 years? Not all carpets are created equal so you need to learn how to choose the right carpet based on how well it is constructed. Don't make the costly mistake of buying new carpet and padding until you learn how to select the right carpet for your needs and goals.
